Valerie is a 6 month old female German Shepherd mix. She is currently 17.8 lbs but we are working on gaining weight!  Valerie has a rare condition called lion’s jaw . "Craniomandibular osteopathy" or "Lion Jaw" is a hereditary disease which affects primarily the bones of the skull, particularly the lower jaw (mandible).

Occurring in young puppies aged around 4-6 months the mandible undergoes a remarkable transformation. Large amounts of new bone are produced around the lower jaw which can often be very painful. This alteration results in a much larger "set of jaws" for the patient's size which explains the reference to lions! Usually, the disease will run it's course and eventually the mandible will return to a more acceptable shape. Pain relief is usually all that is required throughout the course of this bizarre condition.

Thus far there have been no recorded reports of patients developing a corresponding "roar". So as far as "Valerie" is concerned I think we can consider ourselves safe.............for the moment! Valerie loves both dogs and cats. She want to be by her person at all times. She is doing great with house training and basic commands. Valerie has had her DNA test done and results will be available to her new forever home. To apply for adoption go to www.tireddogrescue.com.

Special Needs: Lion’s Jaw

We at Tired Dog Rescue strive to find homes for dogs in need, build quality relationships with responsible owners, and preserve current dog-family homes by seeking solutions to financial, behavioral, and situational dog problems. We believe the lives of homeless, abandoned and abused dogs are just as precious as dogs that currently have a loving home. We believe that all dogs deserve a loving home despite their age, medical condition and/or disabilities. We provide whatever medical care is needed regardless of cost. All dogs are spayed/neutered, heartworm negative and current on vaccinations before being placed.
