Holiday Wishes Grant Campaign

“Let me tell you about my dog!” How many conversations have you started that way? Put your Tired Dog Rescue story to work for the organization by entering the Holiday Wishes Grant Campaign from Petco Foundation and Bob’s from Skechers. The deadline to submit your story is noon, CDT, on Sept. 23. Submit photos and video to really bring your adoption story to life. It’s a simple process and the website provides step-by-step instructions. You can also review past winning stories to get inspired. A Holiday Wishes Grant for TDR could mean the difference between life and death for lost or abandoned dogs on the Gulf Coast.

What do Halloween, rescued dogs, polio, chicken alfredo and good music have in common? They are all part of a one-of-a-kind event at Westside Park in Gulfport Oct. 24. Among the activities is Paws Down on Polio, a Halloween costume contest among TDR and Just Cause rescue dogs available for adoption. Gulf Coast merchants and organizations are inviting the public to partner with them to support Rotary International’s ongoing effort to eradicate polio around the world. Although polio isn’t the threat it used to be in the U.S., there are 350,000 people in 125 countries worldwide with the disease. Polio has been in Rotary’s crosshairs for more than 30 years as an issue worthy of its members’ time, money and effort. The Oct. 24 event is from noon to 5 p.m. and includes trail walks with prizes for the first 50 participants, the pet adoption fair followed by the costume contest at 2 p.m., concessions including hot dogs, chicken alfredo and more, and musical performances by Hadley Hill and Derek Douglas. All proceeds support Rotary’s PolioPlus initiative. Facing U.S. 90, Westside Park is located at 3815-3949 8th St. in Gulfport. It is an alcohol-free venue. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, wear face masks and be prepared to practice social distancing. We are encouraging our supporters to make 2021 the year of #tireddogtuesday by accepting the Venmo Challenge. Launched in 2009, Venmo is a unique combination of social network and digital wallet. It is similar to, and owned by, PayPal, however, Venmo is strictly for non-business use. It’s a great way for friends to settle up the dinner tab, share living expenses, and perhaps most importantly, share causes. Imagine starting your own TDR fundraiser every week by encouraging friends and family to “Venmo” a gift of $2 on #tireddogtuesday. The social network aspect of Venmo encourages comments, so every gift and every giver is an opportunity to promote our work. What a difference that could make in the lives of dozens of “tired dogs” in need.

The public is invited to a free adoption event sponsored by Tired Dog Rescue Saturday, March 27 in Ocean Springs. Potential pet parents can meet current dogs up for adoption and chat with their TDR foster parents. The event will be held at Hillyer House gift shop, 920 Washington Ave., Ocean Springs. During the event, TDR will draw a winner for the latest raffle prize, a gorgeous handmade bowl valued at $150 created by artist Connie Mickle of Pensacola. Sister Swank Boutique is hosting a free adoption event for Tired Dog Rescue on April 17 at its Long Beach location. Meet dogs in need of homes, chat with their foster parents and learn more about TDR's work. Representatives from Woodside Wildlife Rescue of South Mississippi will be there to share information about their important mission. Paws on the Pass boarding and grooming also will be on hand to discuss their services and offer their support to the TDR cause. Five dollars buys a chance to win a basket of pet-themed goodies in the raffle. The fun is from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 200 Jeff Davis Ave.

Classic car fans are invited to support Tired Dog Rescue Aug. 11 at Cruise Night at D'Iberville's Dairy Queen from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Purchase a 50/50 ticket for a chance to win half the cash and the other half goes to TDR. Also, door prizes will be raffled every hour. Meet some of the dogs up for adoption. Purchase cool TDR merchandise, and talk to foster parents and other volunteers. All makes, models--and fans of classic cars and canines--are welcome. DQ is located at 10634 Auto Mall Parkway in D'Iberville.
